At a recent campaign event, President Obama said that the United States “became an economic superpower because we knew how to build things.” He went on to list the Hoover Dam and the Golden Gate Bridge as monuments to America’s capacity for greatness.
Yet somewhere along the line, the ability to complete massive public works projects ended. “When did that happen?” the president asked.
It’s impossible to pinpoint exactly when it happened, but we all know why it happened, and it has nothing to do with our capacity for innovation. The culprit is a labyrinth of increasingly complex and confusing federal regulations.
Take, for example, the Gulf of Mexico. Deepwater drilling was considered virtually impossible in the early 1900s, but technological advances and the human spirit of innovation made it a reality. Today the Gulf of Mexico is the largest single source of domestic petroleum in the United States.

Why the Occupy People and too Much Welfare are Futile Efforts
There is an apocryphal story that you have heard.
If you took 100 people from all strata of economic situations, welfare, middle class, very wealthy, occupy wall street folks, commodity traders, the guy who works at the convenience store. A full on cross section.
IF you gave all of them a hundred thousand dollars, making them all equal in 3 years what would be your prediction.
OH, one codicil, they would have to be anonymous and unable to tap into any of their current relationships, arrangements or resources. They would have to do the best they could with the resources they have. It would be best if you could move them each to a different city where they knew no one.
This would require that each person live by their wits and abilities.
What do you think would happen? Well it has been tried.
In the end, those who had been wealthy, were once again.
Those who were poor became poor again.
Those in the middle ended up in the middle.
The truth is you are what you decide to be. You have no future except that which you decide to become. People are not poor because they don't have opportunity. It's because they do not believe nor understand what it takes to become wealthy.
So, go ahead destroy capitalism. The ones at the top, the wealthy who you displace will be back where they were in a few years and the Occupy people will be still protesting.
Makes me sad.
People are as prosperous as they make their mind up to be.
The Bible says, YOUR Gift will make room for you. That's true in the natural as well.

Seth's Blog: The paradox of expectations
Low expectations are often a self-fulfilling prophecy. We insulate ourselves from failure, don't try as hard, brace for the worst and often get it.
High expectations, on the other hand, will inevitably lead to disappointment. Keep raising what you expect and sooner or later (probably sooner) it's not going to happen. And we know that a good outcome that's less than the great one we hoped for actually feels like failure.
Perhaps it's worth considering no expectations. Intense effort followed by an acceptance of what you get in return. It doesn't make good TV, but it's a discipline that can turn you into a professional.

From Today's Chicago Tribune Letters to the editor. I would be interested in your take on this.. I have a strong opinion about her letter to the paper. BUT, what do YOU think?
I occupy because corporations are not people, and money is not the same thing as free speech.
I occupy because I believe in united citizens, not Citizens United.
I occupy because our military is spending billions of dollars to occupy foreign countries while jobs, infrastructure and the economy suffer at home.
I occupy because my generation should have opposed these wars in greater numbers and with greater outrage to start with.
I occupy because I am tired of going to the polls and trying to decide which politician is least likely to attempt to sell a Senate seat to the highest bidder.
I occupy because I am tired of seeing executives of failed companies receiving bonuses while their employees are laid off without severance.
I occupy because I believe in the First Amendment and the civil liberties it grants us.
I occupy because the system is not broken but relies on this kind of active participation to remain strong.
I occupy because it is exciting to see democracy working.
I occupy because after seven years combined of undergraduate and graduate studies, I have student loan debt but not the gainful employment necessary to pay it down.
I occupy because I have been underemployed since finishing school, often working two or three part-time jobs to try to make ends meet.
I occupy because I have spent half of this year unemployed altogether, through no fault of my own. I occupy because the unemployed cannot afford to be invisible statistics any longer.
I occupy because the alternative is sitting in my parents' basement writing cover letters that won't even be rejected, just ignored.
I occupy because if it weren't for the safety net my parents have provided, I would be sitting on a street corner all day asking for a different kind of change.
I occupy because my dreams have been deferred, and it was only a matter of time before they would explode.
A note to a jobless friend
An old friend is out of work. Discouraged. I wrote this note to his loyal and loving wife to encourage him. I hope it did. Then I thought, maybe there is someone else who needs some encouragement. My friend is about my age, out of work and feeling low. I know how he feels. Here's what I wrote:
I know how disheartening it can be. I was out of work and nearly bankrupt at the age of 58. Business had closed. So had the church I was leading. It was painful. That was in 2002. Today...life is very different.
In 9 years I have come back stronger than ever. There is hope. It might mean a whole new thing. God has a way of slamming all the doors shut except the open one named destiny. One thing I know, at his age, a Job is not the answer. Jobs don't work anymore.
Get his skill set out and see where they fit in. IF it was guaranteed he will never find another job for the rest of his life, then what would he do to make any money at all? That is the new reality. Start doing that and if a "Job" shows up... that's a plus. It's what I had to do when it all came crashing down. I am more focused than ever. There is HOPE...but it's not in a job.
He knows where his true hope is...he will find it again.
